The problem of Cuba football defections By Paul Blake

US-Cuba relations may have entered a new era with the opening of embassies but defections to the US seem to be on the rise. Cuba's national football team was knocked out of the Gold Cup at the weekend but the team's return flight from the US will have a few extra spaces. At least four players have defected since the tournament kicked off on 7 July. Maybe more. The Cuban team came to their quarter-final match in Baltimore with a 19-man squad, just one more than what is required to participate in the tournament. "I think it's enough to play the game and to play the tournament," coach Raul Gonzalez told reporters. The American team's coach, Jurgen Klinsmann, seemed to feel his counterpart's pain when he said: "We know what they're going through on and off the field, so it's huge admiration with how they dealt with everything they went through." Since Presidents Obama and Castro announced a historic rapprochement between the two ideologically opposite neighbours in December, relations have been warming. On Monday, a Cuban embassy opened in Washington and an American embassy started business in Havana - the first embassies the two countries have exchanged in a half-century.

Newcastle backed to sign QPR striker Charlie Austin

Austin’s impressive haul earned him a first England call-up towards the end of the campaign and he has been linked with several top-flight clubs. However, the odds on Aston Villa, West Ham, Chelsea and Bournemouth drifted significantly as interest in him joining the Magpies cranked up, while Austin was 20/1 to remain with QPR before the market was pulled.Sky Bet’s Chris Spicer said: “It has come as somewhat of a surprise to see such interest in Charlie Austin’s future amid a lack of media reports surrounding his future. “The size of the bets also imply that they came from sources that know something that we don’t, forcing us to cut the odds significantly and eventually pull the market.”

Lewis McGugan signs three year deal at Sheffield Wednesday

The 26-year-old enjoyed two separate successful loan periods at The Owls last season, making 22 appearances and scoring three goals in the process. McGugan also picked up two of Wednesday’s Player of the Month awards during a successful season in Yorkshire. The midfielder began his career at Nottingham Forest and made 202 appearances for them before moving to Watford on a free transfer in 2013. McGugan featured regularly in his first season at Vicarage Road but was deemed surplus to requirements in Watford’s last campaign before being loaned out to Wednesday. The former England U19 international had previously said he was open to possibility of extending his loan deal to a permanent switch. "If Sheffield Wednesday and Watford can do a deal, then brilliant, but it’s up to the clubs. I can only concentrate on playing well on the pitch," he said earlier in the year.

Inverness 0-1 FC Astra: Caley lose in first European tie

Inverness Caledonian Thistle's first-ever match in European football ended in disappointment as they lost 1-0 to Astra Giurgiu in the Highlands. John Hughes' side started the Europa League second qualifying round first-leg tie well and their composure in passing the ball about belied their lack of European experience. However, a Constantin Budescu free-kick after 24 minutes was enough to separate the sides and dampen the enthusiasm around Caley's first appearance against European opposition.Romanian side Astra, who played Scottish champions Celtic in the group stages of the competition last season, looked sloppy in possession in the early stages and Ryan Christie's first effort after eight minutes was deflected wide. Despite Inverness forcing the issue at the Caledonian Stadium, it was the away side who took the lead through a contentious free-kick when debutant goalkeeper Owain Fon Williams could only get a hand to Budescu's brilliant effort from just outside the box. The Scottish Cup holders were the better side in the first half but chances were at a premium. However, Aaron Doran did bring out a good save from Silviu Lung Jr in the Astra goal after 35 minutes following some neat build-up play.

Wayne Rooney hails 'fantastic' Bastian Schweinsteiger

Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney says the whole squad has been given a boost by the arrival of World Cup winner Bastian Schweinsteiger. The 29-year-old said the signing of the Germany skipper alongside Matteo Darmian, Memphis Depay and Morgan Schneiderlin has given all the players in the squad a lift. The Reds striker feels excited by the arrival of Schweinsteiger, who won eight Bundesliga titles with Bayern Munich, and is looking forward to lining up alongside him and the rest of his new team-mates after flying out to the United States for the club’s pre-season tour.

Jordy Clasie joins Southampton on five-year contract

Southampton have signed Dutch midfielder Jordy Clasie on a five-year deal from Feyenoord. Clasie, who has cost the Saints a fee of around £8.4m, is seen as a direct replacement for Morgan Schneiderlin, who left for Manchester United earlier this week. The 24-year-old has 11 international caps and was part of Louis van Gaal's squad for the 2014 World Cup finals. Clasie has been with Feyenoord for most of his professional career - spending one season on loan with another Rotterdam side Excelsior - and made his debut in Ronald Koeman's first game in charge. “It feels good to be joining Southampton. It’s a nice club, and I’m happy to be here," Clasie said. “It’s a big club playing in what I think is the biggest and most important league. "Ronald being here is a big thing for me and that was important in me coming here, but even if he wasn’t here, I’d have come to this club. "I played every game for him. He’s a good trainer and a good man so I like him, but I came here not only for him. I came here for the club. “I’ve watched many games of Southampton, and it’s felt good when I’ve watched these games. “I hope that I have many good moments and good years here.”

Sergio Ramos is a cut above Man Utd's defence – and that’s an issue

Sergio Ramos is world class but would he be the final piece in Man Utd’s defensive jigsaw? Adam Bate asks the question... Diego Costa and Cesc Fabregas did it at Chelsea last season. There are others convinced that Petr Cech could fulfil a similar role at Arsenal this summer. It’s that one signing in precisely the position it’s needed that immediately inspires confidence that a club’s fortunes will be drastically improved. The situation at Manchester United is somewhat more muddled. First and foremost, the club is some way short of acquiring the services of Sergio Ramos and there remains the nagging suspicion that the dalliance will conclude in the defender signing a new contract at Real Madrid. Nothing [against] Ramos but it can’t be right.” Notwithstanding the esteem in which De Gea is regarded at Old Trafford, it’s still quite the reaction to being linked with one of the world’s best defenders. As fellow Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher pointed out this week, there are few better.

Newcastle United: Where do they need to strengthen in the summer?

Ninth when Alan Pardew left for Crystal Palace at Christmas, the Magpies unravelled dramatically under John Carver, their fate dragged out until the final day after a slump that included eight consecutive defeats - the club's worst run in Premier League history. Owner Mike Ashley faced mass protests as relegation loomed but then, in a rare interview, told Sky Sports he would not leave until the club "won something". It was the boldest of statements and so fans - desperate to feel the St James' Park pull again - wait to see if actions follow words. Mike Ashley vowed to remain Newcastle owner despite criticism from fans in an exclusive interview with Sky Sports Mike Ashley vowed to remain Newcastle owner despite criticism from fans in an exclusive interview with Sky Sports Recruitment of half a dozen new first-team players - last year's squad was short on both numbers and quality - appears a necessity, not greed, if Newcastle are to compete in the top half, but we've picked out three areas especially ripe for reinforcements... Striker The Magpies thought they'd ticked the centre-forward box when they signed Emmanuel Riviere from Monaco last summer - but he scored a single Premier League goal and his team-mates mustered only a further 39 between them all season.

Reece Oxford will become West Ham's youngest ever player against FC Lusitans, but who is he?

Reece Oxford is set to become West Ham's youngest-ever player in Thursday night's Europa League qualifier against FC Lusitans. The 16-year-old, who wasn't even born when new manager Slaven Bilic played for West Ham, will form part of an experimental starting line-up in front of a sell-out crowd at Upton Park against the Andorran minnows. At 16 years and 198 days, Oxford will beat a club record set by Billy Williams in 1922 when he made his West Ham debut at the age of 16 and 221 days. Here, we take a closer look at the talented teenager. Man City sign Enes Unal - we profile the Turkish youngster

Unal attracted attention from across Europe after scoring 182 goals in just 100 appearances for Bursaspor's reserve side, along with 24 goals in 25 international games at Under-16 level for Turkey. At 16 he became the youngest player to score in the Turkish Super Lig, netting two minutes after coming on as a substitute in the 72nd minute of a 1-1 draw with Galatasaray in August 2013. His six other goals for the first-team also came from after coming off the substitutes bench. He also won his first senior cap for Turkey against Luxembourg in March, playing 33 minutes in a 2-1 win. And according to the Manchester Evening News, Unal's family are Manchester City fans, and he even tweeted after their dramatic 2012 title win "I can’t believe it, everybody in my house including my mum are M.City fans." That will go down well... Sergio Aguero: Scores City's title-winning goal in 2012, an occasion Unal celebrated himself Sergio Aguero: Scores City's title-winning goal in 2012, an occasion Unal celebrated himself Will he get a chance? As with any club in the top four of the Premier League, there will be no guarantees for Unal. Among the multi-million pound recruits at Manchester City since Manuel Pellegrini's arrival in 2013 are younger prospects Bruno Zucilini and Zacharias Faour, and the pair give some indication as to how Unal may be utilised over the next one or two seasons. Argentine midfielder Zucilini, 22, was signed from Racing Club in 2014, and despite playing 30 minutes in City's 3-0 defeat by Arsenal in the Community Shield, was loaned to Cordoba for more first-team experience.

Liverpool's Adam Lallana applauds Nathaniel Clyne signing

We’ll look to improve on last year – it was obviously disappointing but we’ll look forward to get going again." Clyne made his England debut last November and is expected to be the replacement for Glen Johnson at both club and international level. The 24-year-old said he was focused on winning silverware while at Anfield and Lallana believes the signing has been a "coup" for Liverpool. "To manage to persuade him to sign for Liverpool - as I'm sure there would have been other top clubs, and even European clubs interested in him - is a great coup for us," Lallana told liverpoolfc.com. "He's as solid as they come for a right-back and getting forward, he's got goals in his locker. "In one versus one situations defensively, he's the kind of full-back you just don't want to come up against." After signing for Liverpool, we look back at one of Nathaniel Clyne's best strikes for Southampton After signing for Liverpool, we look back at one of Nathaniel Clyne's best strikes for Southampton The Liverpool midfielder is also impressed by the moves the club have already made in readiness for the start of pre-season next week. "The signings so far have been tremendous," he said. "There's (Roberto) Firmino, (James) Milner, (Danny) Ings and now Clyne, as well as (Adam) Bogdan and (Joe) Gomez. "It's a great variety and added to what we've already got, hopefully it can be a good combination for success."
