Wenger: The Ox is too critical of himself

Arsene Wenger has hinted that Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is not part of his first-choice XI because he is too self-critical. The 22-year-old has started just two of six Premier League games this season as Wenger has opted to play Aaron Ramsey out of position on the right. He is expected to return for the Capital One Cup tie with Tottenham, but his manager wants to see more belief from a player who started both recent England games. “He is at the age now where he is getting picked regularly for the national team. He is picked by me as well for the team,” said Wenger. “It is a very important season because of the nature he is growing. You feel the evolution has a sense of responsibility. “I think Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain must believe more in himself. He must believe more in his talent and that will help him develop as a player. “I think sometimes he is too critical of himself. I would like him to play with the freedom and express the desire of his talent.”

Bournemouth 2-0 Sunderland: Ritchie rocket

Matt Ritchie scored a sublime goal and Callum Wilson was on the scoresheet again as Bournemouth beat Sunderland 2-0 to leave the Black Cats bottom.
Cherries boss Eddie Howe uncharacteristically made five changes to the side which lost at Norwich last weekend but he was rewarded as his team were straight out of the traps.
Sunderland had hardly touched the ball before Wilson scored his fifth Premier League goal of the campaign and a stunner from Matt Ritchie put them out of sight of Sunderland, who had defender Younes Kaboul sent off in the second half after the France international had been given the run-around by Wilson.
The last time the Black Cats were on the south coast they capitulated in an 8-0 defeat at Southampton, but although they looked in danger of a repeat, Dick Advocaat’s side rallied and former Bournemouth loanee Jermain Defoe missed a golden chance before Jeremain Lens saw an effort wrongly disallowed for offside.
Howe, who played alongside Defoe during his stint with the Cherries, may have labelled the striker the best finisher he has ever seen but Wilson may soon give him a run for his money as the man whose goals saw Bournemouth reach the Premier League struck inside the opening four minutes.

Sunderland goalkeeper Costel Pantilimon had blasted a clearance out of the modest Vitality Stadium but the hosts were quick to react and Simon Francis found Dan Gosling with the resulting throw-in, with the former Newcastle man sliding in Wilson, who held off Kaboul to fire home the opener.
If that goal was impressive, the second that followed five minutes later was spectacular.
Sunderland cleared a near-post corner but only as far as Ritchie, who controlled the ball on his chest and flashed a volley past Pantilimon before the former Manchester City man could move.
Howe said ahead of the game that keeping Defoe quiet would make the difference for his side, but when the former Tottenham man was slipped through on goal he could not reduce the arrears as Artur Boruc kept out his low shot.

Advocaat introduced Jack Rodwell at half-time and the midfielder saw an effort deflect behind for a corner from which Lens scored a diving header, only to see the assistant referee wrongly flag for offside.
The visitors had their tails up and Fabio Borini arrowed a long-range strike inches over Boruc’s goal as they looked to get a foothold on the game.
Steven Fletcher was the next man to be thrown on by Advocaat, this time with Defoe the man replaced after an unhappy return to his former club, but any hopes of a comeback were ruined with 15 minutes remaining as Kaboul picked up a second booking of the afternoon for a mistimed challenge on Wilson.

Marc Pugh almost added a third for the Cherries but his shot into the turf bounced on to Pantilimon’s crossbar and was cleared.
However, the result had long-been decided as Bournemouth won their second game of the season and left Sunderland propping up the table.

The problem of Cuba football defections By Paul Blake

US-Cuba relations may have entered a new era with the opening of embassies but defections to the US seem to be on the rise. Cuba's national football team was knocked out of the Gold Cup at the weekend but the team's return flight from the US will have a few extra spaces. At least four players have defected since the tournament kicked off on 7 July. Maybe more. The Cuban team came to their quarter-final match in Baltimore with a 19-man squad, just one more than what is required to participate in the tournament. "I think it's enough to play the game and to play the tournament," coach Raul Gonzalez told reporters. The American team's coach, Jurgen Klinsmann, seemed to feel his counterpart's pain when he said: "We know what they're going through on and off the field, so it's huge admiration with how they dealt with everything they went through." Since Presidents Obama and Castro announced a historic rapprochement between the two ideologically opposite neighbours in December, relations have been warming. On Monday, a Cuban embassy opened in Washington and an American embassy started business in Havana - the first embassies the two countries have exchanged in a half-century.

Newcastle backed to sign QPR striker Charlie Austin

Austin’s impressive haul earned him a first England call-up towards the end of the campaign and he has been linked with several top-flight clubs. However, the odds on Aston Villa, West Ham, Chelsea and Bournemouth drifted significantly as interest in him joining the Magpies cranked up, while Austin was 20/1 to remain with QPR before the market was pulled.Sky Bet’s Chris Spicer said: “It has come as somewhat of a surprise to see such interest in Charlie Austin’s future amid a lack of media reports surrounding his future. “The size of the bets also imply that they came from sources that know something that we don’t, forcing us to cut the odds significantly and eventually pull the market.”

Lewis McGugan signs three year deal at Sheffield Wednesday

The 26-year-old enjoyed two separate successful loan periods at The Owls last season, making 22 appearances and scoring three goals in the process. McGugan also picked up two of Wednesday’s Player of the Month awards during a successful season in Yorkshire. The midfielder began his career at Nottingham Forest and made 202 appearances for them before moving to Watford on a free transfer in 2013. McGugan featured regularly in his first season at Vicarage Road but was deemed surplus to requirements in Watford’s last campaign before being loaned out to Wednesday. The former England U19 international had previously said he was open to possibility of extending his loan deal to a permanent switch. "If Sheffield Wednesday and Watford can do a deal, then brilliant, but it’s up to the clubs. I can only concentrate on playing well on the pitch," he said earlier in the year.
